Comprehensive Iron Testing for Fertility & Hormonal Health

Standard blood tests often miss iron deficiency. We offer a full iron panel to assess iron status properly — including ferritin and transferrin saturation.

Iron Testing Beyond Standard Blood Tests

Iron deficiency is one of the most common — and most overlooked — factors affecting women’s health and fertility.

Many patients are told their blood tests are “normal,” yet continue to experience fatigue, brain fog, low mood, or difficulty conceiving. In many cases, iron status has not been fully assessed.

We offer comprehensive iron panel testing to give a clearer, more accurate picture of iron levels — beyond what is typically measured in standard NHS blood tests.

Why Iron Matters

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, particularly in women of reproductive age.

Iron plays a critical role in:

  • Energy production and oxygen delivery
  • Cognitive function and mental clarity
  • Hormonal balance
  • Ovulation and endometrial function
  • Early pregnancy and implantation

Low iron stores can contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, and reduced resilience to stress — all of which can impact both day-to-day wellbeing and fertility outcomes.

Why Standard Testing Often Misses It

In many cases, iron deficiency is not identified through routine testing.

This is because:

  • Testing often focuses on haemoglobin (to detect anaemia)
  • Ferritin may be reported as “normal” even when low
  • Transferrin saturation (TSAT) is rarely included

Iron deficiency can exist long before anaemia develops. If only haemoglobin is considered, earlier stages are easily missed.

What We Test

Our iron panel provides a more complete assessment of iron status.

It includes:

  • Ferritin (iron stores)
  • Transferrin saturation (TSAT)
  • Serum iron
  • Total iron binding capacity (TIBC)
  • Full blood count

Optional:

  • C-reactive protein (CRP) to assess inflammation where relevant

This allows us to identify both absolute and functional iron deficiency.

Specialist Referral for Iron Infusion

We work in collaboration with Dr Henry Murdoch of the Gloucestershire Iron Clinic for patients who require intravenous iron infusion.

This may be appropriate where:

  • Iron deficiency is confirmed and requires rapid correction
  • Oral iron is not tolerated
  • Oral supplementation has been ineffective

This pathway ensures patients have access to appropriate medical treatment where needed.

If Iron Deficiency Is Identified

If testing indicates iron deficiency, next steps may include:

  • Dietary and nutritional support
  • Oral iron supplementation (where appropriate)
  • Referral for intravenous iron infusion via specialist care

We will guide you through the most appropriate pathway based on your results, symptoms, and clinical context.

Who This Is For

Iron panel testing may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Have been told your blood tests are “normal” but still feel unwell
  • Experience fatigue, brain fog, or low mood
  • Have heavy menstrual cycles
  • Are trying to conceive or preparing for IVF
  • Have been diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”
  • Have experienced recurrent miscarriage
  • Do not tolerate oral iron supplements

Our Approach

Iron deficiency is one of the few areas where we can clearly measure, identify, and treat a problem — yet it is often missed in standard care.

Our approach is simple:

1

Test thoroughly

2

Interpret carefully

3

Act appropriately
